This projects was to design and build a piece of storage furniture with only a 4'x4' half sheet of plywood. My designs originated with a much more "grand" storage options, but I had to scale it down to fit within the limitations. My design for this furniture piece ended up changing slightly during the design process. But overall, my Night Side Table ended up being one of my favorite projects.
My inspiration for this project stemmed from Mondrian's "Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Grey and Blue", as I love the grid system, and wanted to incorporate these into my design. My Ideation sketches show the process in which I went through and how I had to "scale down" my idea.
I crafted a cardboard, to scale model to figure out how I would go about building the night table. With this model are some of my in process creation photos of the final product.
I made Fusion 360 model renders to see how this product would look with different wood materials and finishes.
This is my final built product of The Mondrian Night Side Table.
It is built from Birch Plywood (4x4ft). I used the table saw to create the shapes/side, bottom, and top panels as well as the slots the middle vertical separator and shelf are slotted and glued to. It was finished with a clear polyurethane varnish and was polished with steel wool.
